Nelson Trujillo, MD

Board Member

Nelson Trujillo was born and raised in Washington D.C. He attended college in New Orleans at Tulane University where he graduated with a degree in biomedical engineering. He returned home to Washington DC to attend George Washington University Medical School. He moved to Colorado to complete his internship and residency in internal medicine and after training, he served two years on the faculty at Denver Health Hospital. Dr. Trujillo then returned to the University of Colorado to complete a fellowship in cardiology and nuclear medicine. After eight years in Denver, he moved to Boulder to begin practice in cardiology as part of Rocky Mountain Cardiology at Boulder Community Hospital. That group grew to become Boulder Heart now at the Anderson Building at the Foothills Campus.

Along with practicing medicine, Dr. Trujillo has served as president of the Boulder Medical Society and  President of the Boulder Community Medical Staff.  He also has served on the board of directors of both the hospital and the foundation. His research interests include primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. He leads Walk with the Doc Boulder to promote wellness in the community.

He has worked with SomaLogic on a clinical trial using proteonomics in clinical practice. This work was highlighted in the New York Times Magazine in 2018.

Dr. Trujillo has many interests outside of medicine, including art, photography, and the outdoors. He lives in Boulder with his wife. They have three adult children.
